Although with the weather we are having at present it doesn't feel as though summer is on its way now is the time to have a good spring clean and really get into those cracks and crevices. Dark damp and dirty corners can be a haven for many pests and you could help prevent them by keeping your home as clean as possible.

Another good tip is to check any holes or cracks in your house that may allow pests to enter your home. With many rat and mice jobs that we do we discover holes in the home that need proofing to help to try and prevent the pests returning.

Foxes now a giant problem across Sussex - According to the Argus

Pest Control Blog

Today we thought we would share this article from the Argus this week, as Craig Davies, director of Sussex Pest Control, was asked to give his opinion on the phenomenon of foxes becoming bigger....

Giant foxes are spreading across Sussex – and compost heaps could be to blame.

As reported in the Argus 4:50pm Tuesday 6th March 2012

Experts say the animals are becoming more brazen as they have increasing contact with humans and are growing much larger in size by feeding on rubbish in towns and cities.

Pest controllers said that environmentally friendly compost heaps could be a major attraction to the county’s growing fox population.

Sussex’s biggest recorded fox weighed 35lb when it was shot earlier this year.

The Sussex showstopper, measuring more than 4ft 2in from nose to tail, was caught by pest controller Roy Lupton in woodland near a housing estate in East Grinstead.

Incredible growth

Mr Lupton said: “When I saw it through the scope I couldn’t believe it was a fox.

“I have never seen a fox of that size before. Not every fox we are shooting is making these sizes, but more and more individual ones are coming through.”

The incredible growth in the size of the animals in Sussex was discovered after Britain’s biggest recorded fox had been shot – weighing 39lb and measuring almost 5ft.

Experts are now predicting the plentiful supply of food and non-fatal methods of controlling foxes mean it is only a matter of time before even bigger foxes are seen in urban areas.

Craig Davies, the director of Brighton Pest Control, said: “From our experience, and speaking to other pest controllers in the area, they are becoming more brazen.

“There are definitely more of them around and they are becoming more used to seeing people. They are getting bigger because they have easier access to food sources, like bins.

“A lot of the time it is down to people having compost heaps at the backs of their gardens. People trying to be environmentally friendly are effectively providing a food source for foxes.”

Charlie Jacoby, of the hunting website Fieldsports, said: “Foxes are getting bigger. It won’t be long before we hear of a 40lber.

“But the tamer you make foxes, the more likely they are to bite the hand that feeds them.

“They are wild animals.”

Bit of a fun science lesson today as I came across some interesting news articles this week that claim that new research proposes that the pattern of bold stripes on a zebra reflect light in a way that helps the animals evade disease infested flies. So here is an example of natural pest control at work!

I wonder if we can utilise this research in a new method of preventing insect infestations........

Giving foxes a bad name...

We first heard of this video experiment (rather worryingly!)  in a pest control magazine. It depicts a scene whereby a dead piglet has been put in baby clothes in a buggy and a video has been set up to record what happens. Unsurprisingly a fox comes along and takes the dead piglet. The aim of the video was to show how a fox could take a baby from a pushchair. From our point of view this seems a bit ridiculous as regardless of how it is dressed, this is a pig and not a baby. A fox would not be tricked by some clothes into thinking this is a baby! It seems to have generated a lot of discussion and we'd be interested to hear what you think....

Professional Pest Control Vs. DIY Pest Control

Pest Control Blog

In this day and age and in the current financial climate everyone is looking to save a bit of money. When it comes to pests many people's first reaction is to go down the DIY route and head to the local hardware shop to arm yourself with sprays and traps.

Unfortunately when pests come to stay they mean to stay for the duration and so you will need to arm yourself with the right product, possibly lots of it and know what you are doing. And with anything, there are pros and cons of both approaches so here are some things to bear in mind....

DIY Pest Control

  • You need to gather information on your target pest, whether this is mice, fleas or ants as they all require different approaches
  • You will need to invest money in the right products and time to apply them correctly, laying a couple of mouse traps will not be sufficient!
  • Remember that you are using chemicals and take the necessary precautions to safeguard yourself, your family and your pets
Professional Pest Control
  • This will cost more but you are paying for expertise
  • Will be trained in chemical usage and the health and safety aspects of pest control, thus minimising any risks
  • The whole picture will be looked at and a professional pest controller will have the knowledge to advise you on preventative measures
  • Some pests, such as bedbugs, are impossible to get rid of using household DIY products and you will need professional insecticide
So all in all there are advantages and disadvantages of both approaches but in most circumstances, especially for pests such as bedbugs, woodworm and wasps we would recommend calling in the experts!
