3 x large Pigeon nets, Newham hospital, London
The below photos shows an example of the installation of 1 continuous bird net on a very large scale. The work was carried out as a sub contractor for the UK's largest main contractor for architectural reasons as well as to prevent any future infestation of pigeons within the courtyard areas - looks were extremely important as the net was a main feature within the courtyards garden and one that could be easily spotted by looking upwards at the sky so hence a perfect square was required (following the same line down all 4 sides)
Access for the installation of the netting was difficult due to no access for a cherry picker within the courtyards so hence the only approved method was with an aluminum mobile tower reaching to 8 meters - this was extremely difficult for the fact that the tower had to be continuously erected and dismantled to allow move the tower - the time taken was 3.5 days - with scaffolding or a cherry picker this task could have been completed within 1 day!.
Due to the weight of the nets, cross wires where used to support and reduce the sag within the middle sections. Depending on the style of the pigeon net we used either a + for the large square a v for the U shaped courtyard and a w for the large rectangular courtyard. Supporting the net is extremely important to take the weight of the net and also when extra factors are added including rain and snow (doubling or even trebling the weight of the net) - the cross wire was added within the installation stage of the initial wiring system.
